Asia Argento on Playing a Racist, Locarno Award & Gia Carangi Doc | Hollywood Reporter (2026)

Asia Argento, the Italian actress, filmmaker, and musician, is set to grace the grand outdoor stage at the 79th edition of the Locarno Film Festival in the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland. This year's festival will celebrate her creative prowess with the Life Achievement Award, an honor that recognizes her unique contributions to the film industry. As she prepares to receive this prestigious award, Argento also presents Jorge Thielen Armand's 'Death Has No Master' at the festival, a film that delves into themes of colonialism and trauma. In this article, we explore Argento's journey, her approach to challenging roles, and her upcoming documentary project about the late supermodel Gia Carangi.

A Shift in Energy and a Sign from the Universe

Argento's journey to receiving the Life Achievement Award has been a transformative one. She reflects on a recent shift in her energy, a change that has led her to embrace humility and a deeper understanding of her work. "I truly didn’t expect it. Actually, lately I was thinking, my God, I’ve never been invited to Locarno, and I never had a movie at Locarno. I was self-deprecating as usual, thinking they must hate me and everyone is against me. And then this came totally out of the blue, and I was moved to tears."

This recognition from the Locarno Film Festival serves as a signpost, guiding her towards a path of authenticity and honesty in her work. "With my work, I was in the past [sometimes] criticized for it being a little bit extreme and pushing the boundaries of what was accepted from a woman, as an actress, as a filmmaker. What I was trying to achieve created this gut unease, and now this is a way of the universe telling me that I did the right thing at the right time."

Embracing Challenging Roles

Argento's fascination with complex and tormented characters is evident in her choice of roles. She seeks out characters with nonlinear narratives, vast histories, and deep-rooted struggles. "I always find characters that are nonlinear, that are a bit tormented and that have a vast history and things to face from the past fascinating. I like complex characters with a lot of suffering."

Her latest role in 'Death Has No Master' is a testament to her willingness to take risks. The film, set in Venezuela, explores the weight of colonialism and the trauma it inflicts. Argento's preparation for the role involved understanding both sides of the colonial narrative, a process that made her question her own character's morality. "It was pretty hard, because we developed the script and the character a lot while we rehearsed for a month before the shoot in the locations with all the non-actors there."

Executive Producing 'Gia - The Shadow of Beauty'

Argento's involvement in the documentary 'Gia - The Shadow of Beauty' showcases her commitment to exploring diverse themes. The film, directed by Rosita Larocca, delves into the life of the late supermodel Gia Carangi, focusing on her struggles with addiction, her sexuality, and her place in the show business world. "I was always fascinated by Gia Carangi and her arc in this show business world. She was somebody who was a very smart girl who was not fully inside the system."

Argento's role as an executive producer allows her to contribute to a project that she finds personally meaningful. "There are many fascinating [themes and issues] to explore." Her involvement in the documentary is a testament to her belief in the power of storytelling to shed light on important issues.
