The Bridgewater Bridge, a $786 million project in Hobart, has sparked concerns about its structural integrity, with an engineer who worked on the project raising red flags. Dr. Pennington's advisory team suggested a more conventional approach, using multiple piles at different angles, to provide better lateral stability. However, MCD's design utilized single vertical piles, which the team believed could not adequately support the bridge's piers due to the brittle ground conditions.

Despite the concerns raised, the Department of State Growth approved the bridge design in 2022, with the condition that MCD address the issues later. However, with the advisory team disbanded, it remains unclear if these issues were resolved.

MCD declined to comment, referring all questions to the Department of State Growth, which stated that the structural designs were reviewed and certified as compliant and fit-for-purpose.
